Surround Sound Wiring Recommendations

Surround sound wiring  Don't do any wiring for surround sound speakers until you've completely thought through surround sound speaker placement.  You will also need to choose the rest of the components of YOUR particular home theater surround sound system, and where they'll be located.

The best case scenario is to have your local home theater retailer or a qualified contractor pre-wire a new home theater room -- and the rest of the rooms of the house and outside  -- with the future in mind.  Depending on the types of speakers used in your surround sound speaker system, you may also want to consider speaker wall plates for a cleaner look behind floor standing speakers, rough-in frames for in wall and ceiling speakers, etc.

Speaker wiring in walls  For speaker wire, in wall CL3 is usually the safest choice.

How to Hide Speaker Wire If you are installing your surround sound system in an existing room of your home, you can either run in wall speaker wire through the walls, or buy flat speaker wire and run it along baseboards, under carpet or rugs, even directly ON the wall or ceiling.  Hiding speaker wire CAN BE the most daunting task of anyone connecting a home theater system, but it doesn't HAVE to be.  White speaker wire makes for easier hiding.  Tape speaker wire looks like masking tape that sticks directly on the walls, and can easily be painted over.

In addition to your home theater surround system, you may want to expand your home entertainment possibilities by also adding a whole house audio system that can pump stereo music to multiple listening zones throughout your home or outdoors!

Proper surround sound speaker placement, wiring, setup, and installation usually requires certain tools or expertise, and often involves some trial and error before you achieve the best speaker layout and setup for your room.  If you are unsure of how to proceed, get a professional involved NOW to avoid costly and time consuming mistakes and errors.  It pays to do it right THE FIRST TIME!  Find qualified home theater installers and other A/V contractors in your area.
